Calls for Comprehensive Swell Impact Study Before Wind Farm Zoning

Norah Head National Surfing Reserve, renowned for its world-class waves and contribution to the sport of surfing, is urging the government to postpone the zoning of the proposed wind farm until a thorough swell impact study can be conducted. The proposed wind farm has the potential to significantly affect two iconic surf reserves, Norah Head and Merriweather, which have played a pivotal role in nurturing and producing numerous world-class surfers and bodyboarders.

It is imperative that a comprehensive swell impact study be undertaken before proceeding with any zoning decisions related to the wind farm project. Such a study would assess the potential consequences of the wind farm on wave quality, formation, and other vital characteristics that directly impact the surfing experience. Understanding the possible effects of the wind farm on these reserves is crucial in order to protect their invaluable contribution to the sport, local community, and economy.

Norah Head National Surfing Reserve recognises the importance of renewable energy projects in combating climate change and transitioning to a sustainable future. However, it is crucial to strike a balance between these vital initiatives and the preservation of our natural treasures. The proposed wind farm should be subject to rigorous assessment and take into account the significance of the surf reserves, ensuring their long-term preservation for future generations.

A study found on www.sciencedirect.com has us concerned about the impact on swell such a development will have.

Norah Head National Surfing Reserve is committed to engaging constructively with all stakeholders, including the government and wind farm developers, to ensure that a comprehensive swell impact study is conducted. This study will provide valuable insights to inform informed decision-making processes and ensure the protection of our iconic surf reserves.

We urge the government to prioritize the preservation of our surf reserves and delay the zoning decision for the wind farm until a thorough swell impact study can be completed. By doing so, we can maintain the integrity of these world-class surf destinations and uphold the legacy they have created for our surfing community.
