Nestled along the picturesque coastline of Norah Head, a group of dedicated individuals has been working tirelessly to preserve the region’s unique dune ecosystem. Norah Head Coastcare, established in 1997 by Debbie and Bill Alexander, has been a driving force behind protecting native flora from the encroachment of introduced species. In this blog post, we’ll delve into the remarkable history and ongoing efforts of Norah Head Coastcare, shedding light on their journey to maintain the pristine beauty of this stunning area. Alongside them, many locals, including stalwarts like Ralph Peters and Ray Griffiths, joined the cause. Even at the age of 90, Ray Griffiths continues to volunteer today, highlighting the community’s unwavering commitment.
The driving force behind Norah Head Coastcare’s formation was the pressing concern over the degradation of native flora due to the proliferation of introduced species. These passionate individuals recognised the urgent need to take action and protect the natural beauty of their beloved coastline.
One of the early endeavours of Norah Head Coastcare was organising regular working bees, mainly in and around the Bush Street Reserve. These events were dedicated to eradicating invasive weeds that threatened the native vegetation. As a result of their efforts, a service trail was established to provide access to the Lighthouse from the Reserve. Over time, this trail evolved into the cherished Nature Trail that visitors enjoy today.
Norah Head Coastcare’s work continues to this day. The dedicated volunteers gather on the 2nd Sunday and the 3rd and last Wednesday of each month. Their tasks range from weeding and trimming overhanging branches to planting native plants sourced locally and mulching the Nature Trail.
Despite their unwavering commitment, Norah Head Coastcare faces challenges due to the limited number of active members. Presently, only six regular members participate in their efforts. Additional areas, such as weeding the Rockpool stair area, require attention and care.
